Video conferences are becoming the new thing that businesses are doing. And for good reasons since they can save the company money and basically make it easier to talk to those that may be otherwise unreachable. However, though video conferencing is not done in person, the person that is participating in the video conference must realize that there is a certain type of etiquette that is considered proper for video conferences.
First off, the person should be prepared for the video conference. There is nothing more annoying that someone who is rustling papers in the middle of the conference because they are trying to find information. Prepare for this and have what you need laid out in front of you for easier access since the person can see and hear everything that you are doing.
Secondly, the person should be sure that they are talking clearly. Video conferences do utilize microphones to make sure that the other person can hear you. However, if you are mumbling or are simply too far away from the microphone the person is going to have a hard time in hearing you. The key is to loud and to be clear so that you are easily understood.
You should also view video conference just as any other type of meeting, this means that you should turn off cell phones and other electronic devices that could interfere with the meeting. This is just common courtesy and shows that you care about the meeting that you are having. In addition, remember to dress to impress. And be careful not to wear loud clothing to these video conferences, as it may be the only thing that the other person sees.
If you must have a private conversation with those that are in the room with you, remember that you need to mute the microphones so that the people in the conference cannot hear you, this is consider standard for when people are having a meeting to discuss business and is in no way going to offend the other party participating in the video conference.
Just because the person is participating in a video conference, does not mean that they should behave any differently. The video conference is just another meeting, but uses a different format. The person should be sure that they are being themselves just as they would in any other type of meeting in order to ensure that the meeting goes smoothly and off without a hitch. Being nervous is not going to help anyone.
