It involves the selection of line spacing, line length, font, color etc. It’s very important as it influences the way in which the text appears to the reader. It’s very important in today’s world of internet and web designs as it designs the information which is to be conveyed to the reader. It divides the information in such a way that it helps the reader to find out what’s interesting for him.
Top 10 typography Rules:-
There should only be a single space after punctuation, as against the common practice of two spaces while using typewriter in the earlier days.
Always use a hyphenator, not justified text. Sometimes using the format “Justify” can be inappropriate and doesn’t look good in the text, as it creates lots of space in between the words in different circumstances. So it’s always better to use a hyphenator. Keep in mind a simple rule of hyphenator – do not take too little of a word to the next line. Keep at least two characters behind and take at least three characters forward. For example: Be-cause is acceptable, while Bacau-se is not as it takes little part of the word to the next line.
Do not use too much variety of fonts. If possible limit the variety of fonts to three.
Use proper quote and apostrophe marks. Many a times it’s seen that inch marks and feet marks are used by mistake instead of quotations. The keys available in the keyboard are only for inch and feet marks. In Windows, for single quotes, use ALT 0146 and ALT 0147 for the left and right quotes. For double quotes, use ALT 0147 and ALT 0148. Use em dashes, ellipses and avoid using the easier substitute available for these.
Choose proper alignment which is suitable for the text. It’s always better to use left aligned text as it’s easy to read, whereas centre and right aligned texts are not generally used for body content.
Caps should be used properly. It’s not necessary to always use caps to draw attention, as it doesn’t suits always. Use some other options available to get the attention of the readers. Better use italics or Bold for highlighting or emphasizing.
Correct line spacing increases the readability of the text. Line spacing is the space between the lines. A normal line space is considered to be 120% of the font size.
Keep a normal body size of 9-12 points. It will give a great appearance to the text. Larger fonts will not look attractive; also the fonts will be larger in the printouts than what it appears in the screen.
There should be proper margin, line length, and column width provided. Line length is the length of text in one line. The ideal measure is considered to be between 45 – 75 characters including the letters punctuations and spaces. 4.25 inches is considered ideal for a single column page and 2 inches for a two column page.
Do not keep single words alone in a line or single line alone in a page. These are called widows and should be avoided always.
