From the Beach and Into the Stream
Some of the tasks asked of Freelancers are images with scenarios that are aligned to a given theme. Say in a webpage of a product targeted to adolescent girls, behind a lady can be an abstract design of pink or red patterns and shapes. This is where Adobe Photoshop is useful since with the limited picturesque of reality, this program can give you endless options in creating backdrops. In this Photoshop tutorial we shall then learn one of the basic editing skills, changing backgrounds of an original picture to another chosen environment.
The finished image of Changing Background Tutorial
CTRL O or OPEN the photo you want to set as your final background. Then open the other photo that you want to make as your subject.
Click MOVE Tool then drag the subject photo and drop it over the background photo as shown here.
Click the POLYGONAL LASSO TOOL. Be sure though to click the LAYER 1 or your subject photo.
As per following previous steps, the LASSO TOOL is now active and you can now trace the edges of the subject that you only want to be visible to the finished photo.
After tracing, hover the curser inside the subject and then RIGHT CLICK and click SELECT INVERSE to remove the subject from its original background (the beach).
At this time you can see that there are ACTIVE BROKEN LINES in the outermost part of the entire picture and the outlined subject also. Hover the cursor outside the subject then RIGHT CLICK and select FEATHER to refine edges.
Choose your FEATHER RADIUS according to the size of the photo (the higher the resolution, the higher the radius). With this picture of a 7×5 inches of 72 pixel/inch resolution, we used 1PIXEL.
Press DELETE in the keyboard to remove the beach background.
To smoothen the edges, click the SMUDGE TOOL and adjust the BRUSH to 23.
Adjust THE STRENGTH of the SMUDGE TOOL to 18 by adjusting the sliders. While Layer 1 is active, ZOOM IN and use the smudge tool to smoothen the edges of the subject. As you can see here the edges are already polished.
CTRL+M to open the CURVE SETUP WINDOW and adjust values by dragging the sliders UPWARDS to lighten the subject. Be sure that Layer 1 is active while doing this command.
Lastly, position or adjust the subject to the desired area by clicking the MOVE TOOL and using the ARROWS in the keyboard. Select Layer 1 then change the OPACITY LEVEL to 90% to blend the entire image of the subject into the new background.
CLICK OUT and save your file according to your choice of format. Now the couple is transferred into an entirely new background.
