Jetpack?? To anyone unfamiliar with wordpress this means a device to help you fly through the sky. To any freelance you should know that’s where the site stats are being held. Now there are a lot of numbers, charts, and words that aren’t always the most understandable things in the world. So let’s break it down and help you figure this out.
The first thing you will notice is the huge bar graph in front of you. This will show you how many page views you have had each day. You can set it for day, week, or month but the default setting is for day. Now this shows page views not how many people have visited your site that day. It could just be one person who had all the interactions with your site or one hundred different people. WordPress does not have the capabilities in order to show how many unique visitors a day you get as of now.
In the top right corner of the graph is the summary button. By clicking on this it gives a data entry form for three different categories. Number of views a month, average number of views a month, and daily views. Now the first two are self explanatory but the last one has details to it. Along with telling how many views you get every day it also includes the total for the week, the average for the week, and the percentage of change. You can compare this data to previous weeks and days to see what you did each day or week that changed the number of views so much. If this doesn’t please you enough then you can click on the day and be redirected to see the daily stats in four categories.
Now below the bar graph you have 5 different blocks each with a different category or in the daily stats four of them are the same. Refers, top posts & pages, search engine terms, clicks, and finally subscriptions(only under bar graph). Refers are all the places that sent people to your site. Places such as google or twitter could be places that are listed. It will tell you how many people came from each of the sites listed. This is a way to tell how many unique views you got over the day. It’s not entirely accurate since one person can come from the same link multiple times in one moment or they can just type your website directly into the search bar. This can also tell you where you need to focus on. If you are getting lots of views from blog spots or twitter it means you need to work on your SEO. If all your views are from google then you need to work on self promoting your site.
Top posts & pages make a note to which pages of yours are the most popular. Most of the time your homepage will be the most popular page on your site. From this you will be able to tell what your viewers are most interested in. That way you can make changes in order to keep your views happy and pleased. By focusing on what the people like and supplying them with content they like is a sure way to get your site to rise in popularity.
Search engine terms refers to what words or phrases people typed in on google to find your site. From this you can tell how your SEO is doing on google and how many people are coming from what keywords. Not all the time will WordPress be able to tell you what the keywords used are. When it is working this section can be very helpful for you when working on the sites SEO.
Clicks refers to what links on your site people click on. AN example would be if you had links to wordpress plugins and someone clicked on the link you would know. This section will tell you anytime that someone is lead of your site from your own links. It could also help if you if someone is paying by click to have their link on your site you can accurately track how many clicks you get. It can also help by telling you what are the more popular areas on your site.
Subscriptions tell you how many people are subscribed to your site. Not all sites will have subscribers to it but if your site does offer it then this will be an important section. You want to have a decent amount of subscribers and want to up the number to increase the comeback rate. If the number is low it would be wise to focus on a area to bring the number up.
This is all the basic info you will need to master analytics for wordpress. There is a lot more to figure out and understand. By knowing this you will be able to complete any freelancing job that you have. You can help by offering advice or by taking a look at the numbers for anyone. Analytics is an easier section to understand and if done right will greatly improve your success which you will now be able to measure.
